For many years, researchers and practitioners
defined student voice according to their own intentions for the activities and outcomes.
At SoundOut,
we define student voice as any expression of any student, anywhere, at any time about anything related to learning, schools and education.
After working with hundreds of K — 12 schools across the United States and Canada over the last 10 years, I have come to
define student voice as any expression learners make about education, schools, or learning, including their ideas, wisdom, and actions.

In 2004, SoundOut began
defining student voice as «the individual and collective perspective and actions of young people within the context of learning and education.»

Students have repeatedly volunteered to us that they enjoy having a
voice in deciding how to best maintain group function, as well as having a set of
defined responsibilities on a day - to - day basis.

Our inquiry approach has clear and
defined learning outcomes, aligned with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and the Civic, Career and College Framework, which require teacher plannin g. However, the inquiry process is driven by
student choice and
voice and strongly supports educators to implement these ideas, questions and solutions into the learning progression.
I
define artistic
voice as how
students blend ideas with media to construct representations, political
voice is how they articulate ideas about social issues that emerge from their experiences, and by social issues, I mean self - selected topics that impact a larger community and are important to
students (e.g., immigration, cyberbullying).
Dig deep in this two - hour, interactive workshop that breaks down Equity into five components:
define equity within your community, get familiar with your demographics, understand your data and identify opportunities for improvement, practice cultural awareness, agility and competence and make sure your
student voice is heard.

And working to change school climate is least restrictive because few state or locally mandated laws or policies
define school climate, thereby providing the greatest latitude for
student voice, buy - in, and leadership.
The technologies helped
students define intertextual connections, pose questions about the basis for meaning, integrate multiple
voices and perspectives, and adopt a collaborative inquiry stance.
