From its first great formulations by Plato and Aristotle, the chief
defining characteristic
of classical metaphysics has been its separation
of what is given in our experience into two quite different
kinds of reality.
Yet the characters» lives are utterly
defined and guided by science fiction elements (
of the sort that could soon be science
reality), and the
kind of ethical questions implicitly explored are those
of classic science fiction going back to Asimov and Wells, here told with a poignant humanism and thoughtfulness rarely found on the screen today.
Combine this habit with certain stylistic practices associated with commercials and sitcoms and you have the only
kind of reality available to characters in a Coen brothers movie; whether these characters are lovable or detestable, they're lovable or detestable in a TV way —
defined by a minimal set
of traits that are endlessly reiterated and incapable
of expansion or alteration, a fixed loop.
By stripping the game
of any
kind of pre-determined narrative and emphasizing player involvement through gameplay alone, Pope also reminds us
of the the sad
reality that we often confront moral issues and attempt to resolve them because we feel a sense
of obligation to do so only after our engagement in the practices which
define our environment, and our recognition that they are actually the cause
of these problems.
