This may be a
period piece set in Oregon during the Great Depression, but it's
definitely a 70s
film through and through.
The 1977 timeline helps give the
film that vintage feel, and Wan has
definitely learned from the scary movies of that
period.
I know that this is not the first time in the past few years that we've seen a
period film but the reunion of Michelle Pfeiffer and Stephen Frears is
definitely making it feel like it's been decades since I've seen a good
period drama.
The Conversation isn't as well - known or frequently recognized as Apocalypse and The Godfather movies, but it
definitely ranks among the best of Coppola and of the 1970s, a decade it embodies in a way that those other
period films do not.
All the same, it's still a fine, modest
period crime
film with a wonderful central performance, and
definitely worth a look.
In another year, his
film might have had a shot in Best Picture, filling one of the
period slots that are often left open, but Lincoln and Les Misérables most
definitely have those bases covered, gobbling up citations from a whole host of voting bodies.
