This project report explores the development of more cost - effective, integrated supplemental
dehumidification systems.
The company, which paid $ 2 million for the vacant 100,000 - square foot manufacturing and office facility, plans to invest over $ 1 million on renovations and equipment for what will become new world headquarters for Niagara Blower and Kathabar
Dehumidification Systems, one of its subsidiary companies.

Eleven research projects are detailed, including: efficient duct
systems; rain and groundwater management; humidity control
systems; foundation insulation
systems; drying rates of building assemblies; climatically - tuned building materials; right - sized air conditioning; solar
dehumidification; conditioning
systems and control; and advanced framing.
The intent is that the heating and cooling
systems installed will be sized properly because oversized
systems have problems (poor
dehumidification, short cycling...).
For example, perhaps split heat pump water heater
systems can be small enough and portable so that on the hottest / humid days, we can move them inside our homes and run them (probably at a lower capacity and for a longer period) for «free» cooling and
dehumidification.
Humidity control within conditioned spaces is accomplished by the
dehumidification capabilities of air - conditioning
systems and source control.
As such, proper sizing of air - conditioning
systems with consideration of
dehumidification capabilities is important.
Moisture movement by air leakage (the exfiltration of interior moisture - laden air during heating periods and the infiltration of exterior moisture - laden air during cooling periods) is controlled by limiting air leakage openings, controlling the interior levels of moisture during heating periods by utilizing controlled ventilation (dilution by air change) combined with source control (direct venting of clothes dryers as well as the use of subgrade vapor retarders under concrete floor slabs and bath and kitchen exhaust
systems), controlling the interior levels of moisture during cooling periods by utilizing the
dehumidification capabilities of mechanical cooling
systems, and limiting controlled ventilation to minimum values established by indoor air quality concerns.
