An aspiring Member of Parliament in the Ningo Prampram constituency, Sam George has alleged that his name and that of other 3,000 delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been
deleted from the voters» register.
The Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has denied claims that Sam George's name has been
deleted from the voters» register.
But the relaxation of this, has now forced the NPP, to called on the EC to extend the period of re-registration of persons whose names, have been
deleted from the voters» register, because they used NHIS cards to register.
The EC has revealed that only 14,801 persons of the 56,000, whose names were
deleted from the voters» register, have re-registered in the ongoing voters» register exhibition exercise.
The Electoral Commission (EC) says it will not extend the re-registration date for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card registrants whose names were
deleted from the voters register.
According to the commission, it had by Wednesday, July 27, 2016 registered 22,107 out of the 56, 772 names that were
deleted from the voters register and it was obvious that not all the registrants would come back to re-register.
Some political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have called on the EC to extend the 10 - day re-registration of NHIS card registrants whose names have been
deleted from the voters register.

The Supreme Court demanded the list following a return to court by plaintiffs Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako, to seek clarity on the same court's May 5 ruling, in which it ordered the EC to
delete from the register of
voters, names of the dead, minors and those, who were registered onto the poll roll through their NHIS cards.
It ordered that «(a) The Electoral Commission takes steps immediately to
delete or as is popularly known «clean» the current register of
voters to comply with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution, and applicable laws of Ghana; [and] That any person whose name is
deleted from the register of
voters by the Electoral Commission pursuant to order (a) above be given the opportunity to register under the law.»
For the avoidance of doubt, the 1st Defendant / Respondent is hereby ordered forthwith to take all the necessary steps to
delete from the current register of
voters the list of persons whose names were submitted to this court on 29th June 2016 as persons who registered with the NHIS Card.
(b) That any person whose name is
deleted from the register of
voters by the Electoral Commission pursuant to order (a) above be given the opportunity to register under law»
Therefore, having found use of the NHIS card for registration as a
voter to be unconstitutional, the Supreme Court had power to order the Electoral Commission to remove or
delete the affected registrations
from the register of
voters and provide all affected persons a fresh opportunity to be registered as
voters using a constitutionally - compliant form of identification.
Further to the above order (2) the 1st Defendant / Respondent is further ordered to
delete from the current register of
voters the names of persons not included in the list submitted to this court on 29th June 2016 but who are also found to have registered with NHIS Cards».

Mrs Charlotte Osei, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission on Friday explained that
deleting names
from the
voters» register is based on law and not merely on emotion expressed by a group or an individual.
«Unfortunately, once finalised, it requires a legal process to
delete the names of
voters from the register.
