The
colors (and the
delicate fragrances) change subtly with the seasons: there are the greens, pinks, reds, whites and
lavenders of summer; the over-all reddening of the bayberry, huckleberry and deerberry bushes in the fall; the golden brown of the grasses in early winter and, at last, the bleak, gaunt look of January, February and March that makes it clear why oldtime mariners called the island «The Little Gray Lady of the Sea.»
