This project will use an observational program to simultaneously identify the mechanisms responsible for water mass modification within the Terra Nova Bay polynya and document all aspects of
dense shelf water formation within an Antarctic polynya system.

When pulses of warm
water are strong enough to rise over the
shelf's outer ridge, that warm
dense water then flows downward to the grounding point of the glacier and remains there until a new equilibrium is established via basal melting and a retreating grounding point.

densest water in the World Ocean and has two main sources: Arctic shelf water and Greenland Sea Deep W

But deep
water production by convection may be less, depending on how much NADW is Arctic in origin and how much is simply recirculated Antarctic bottom
water (extremely
dense water, formed as brine under the sea ice around polynas offshore of Antarctica and sliding down the continental
shelf into the depths without much mixing, creates a giant pool of
dense water extending all the way up the bottom of the Atlantic to about 60 ° N).
How do the
water column profile and
dense salty
shelf water (HSSW) characteristics evolve on time scales ranging from sub-synoptic to the annual cycle?
Through a complex interplay among the ocean, ice
shelves, and atmosphere, very cold,
dense water builds up on the continental
shelves and eventually spills over their edges, mixing with surrounding
water and sinking to the sea floor.
