To enable such a system in plants, the re-designed receptors need to be targeted extracellularly and we need to address eukaryotic processes that are not fully understood, such as transmembrane signaling, signal -
dependent nuclear translocation, and other signaling complexities.
We then show that an adapted HK functions in plants by linking it to a transcriptional response through signal -
dependent nuclear translocation of a bacterial response regulator [12], to produce a synthetic signal transduction system.
