I

Many of these conditions are notoriously difficult to treat, and many practitioners
have a tendency to treat such complaints mainly by recommending different kinds of drugs or dietary supplements for
symptoms (like insomnia,
depression, constipation, etc.), while generally making
similar dietary recommendations for all patients and only rarely offer the most appropriate lifestyle advice to suit the patients they are dealing with at the time.
Because 13 to 20 % of students suffer from bullying, anxiety, stress,
depression, and
similar concerns, school nurses are on the front line of addressing mental health problems, too (Bohnenkemp, Stephan, & Bobo, 2015; Perou et al., 2013)-- roughly a third of all visits to school nurses
have to do with mental health issues (and related psychosomatic
symptoms, such as headaches and stomachaches).
A review of twenty studies on the adult lives of antisocial adolescent girls found higher mortality rates, a variety of psychiatric problems, dysfunctional and violent relationships, poor educational achievement, and less stable work histories than among non-delinquent girls.23 Chronic problem behavior during childhood
has been linked with alcohol and drug abuse in adulthood, as well as with other mental health problems and disorders, such as emotional disturbance and
depression.24 David Hawkins, Richard Catalano, and Janet Miller
have shown a
similar link between conduct disorder among girls and adult substance abuse.25 Terrie Moffitt and several colleagues found that girls diagnosed with conduct disorder were more likely as adults to suffer from a wide variety of problems than girls without such a diagnosis.26 Among the problems were poorer physical health and more
symptoms of mental illness, reliance on social assistance, and victimization by, as well as violence toward, partners.
A previous study found that the Deterioration Model of Social Support
has been useful in discriminating the potential of stressors to reduce support.57 They found that disaster - induced erosion of perceived social support increased
symptoms of
depression among both primary and secondary victims; the loss of perceived social support also mediated psychological consequences.58 The Deterioration Deterrence Model of Social Support, which is
similar to support - mobilisation models,
has been used to explain how the perceived deterioration of social support can be counteracted by higher levels of received social support.58 59 If post — disaster support mobilisation is implemented, stress should be positively correlated with received support.
Validation for preschool MDD (based on meeting all DSM - IV
symptom criteria)
has been supported by the finding of a specific

similar to those known in adults with
depression, greater family history of mood disorders, as well as observational evidence of depressive affects and behaviors were detected in preschoolers with
depression, providing further validation.22,25,27 - 30 More recent findings from a larger independent sample (N = 306) ascertained from community sites (and serving as the population for this investigation)
have replicated the findings described above and
have also demonstrated that preschoolers with
depression display significant functional impairment evident in multiple contexts rated by both parents and teachers.24
Prior research
has established the influence of maternal
depression on the child's behavioral and emotional health3, 27,28 and its relevance for pediatric practice.29, 30 Several studies
have analyzed the independent effects on children of mothers» and fathers» mental health, but few
have examined the more clinically relevant question of how the mental health of parents jointly influences child outcomes.16, 31,32 The largest study of the joint effects of mothers» and fathers» mental health on children was a population - based study of twins and their parents.16
