deputies in England are considering taking early retirement with most blaming an excessive workload, a survey suggests.

of male primary
teachers, one Asian infant school
deputy head told her that he was given a place on a PGCE
teacher course just because he was a man, without a formal interview.
Around 800
head teachers,
deputies and assistant
heads working in state schools were earning # 100,000 or more in 2012, a census
of schools shows.
Kevin Courtney,

of Teachers, said
heads were often forced to pay fees equivalent to 15 to 20 per cent
of a new recruit's salary, at times racking up bills
of # 60,000 to # 100,000 a year.

teacher workload, 44.6 %
of classroom

deputy heads thought that their time spent on «unnecessary or bureaucratic» tasks had increased, 41.7 % thought that it had stayed the same, and only 4.8 % believed that it had reduced.

teacher, a local authority behaviour adviser and for a university as a
deputy head of education.
