Its economy was
destroyed during the Civil War, and took further blows during the Reconstruction era at the hand of «carpetbaggers» from the North, particularly involving Northern banks providing financing to plantation owners who would pledge their land as collateral and often lost that land when they failed to repay the loans as agreed.
However its interior was
destroyed during the Civil War in 1936.
Although being overwhelmed city by pirates,
destroyed during civil wars and set on fire by the American filibuster William Walker in 1856, it remains one of Nicaragua's most beautiful cities.
