the destruction of the flesh would not be physical death, but the process of learning to defeat temptation and sin.
So for this reason, it seems that handing a person over to Satan for
the destruction of his flesh refers to something else.
In 1 Corinthians 5:5 and 1 Timothy 1:20, Paul says he hands people over to Satan for
the destruction of their flesh.
In 1 Corinthians 5:1 - 5 you see an example of one being delivered to Satan «for
the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus».
This individual being delivered unto Satan didn't result in loss of salvation, but in
the destruction of his flesh, yet his spirit remains saved.
Paul is not saying that
the destruction of the flesh by Satan necessarily leads to salvation.
Why didn't you reference 1 Corinthians 5:5 «To deliver such an one unto Satan for
the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.»
Paul instructs the believers in Corinth to hand a man over to Satan for
the destruction of his flesh (1 Cor 5:5).
When Paul passed sentence on the incestuous Corinthian, «You are to deliver this man to Satan for
the destruction of his flesh» (I Cor 5:5) he was acting in accordance with the Mosaic code of herem or expulsion from the community.
Why, when the translators render «flesh» so adroitly over and over, do they leave it in I Corinthians 5:5, where «
the destruction of the flesh» looks like, and has been taken by commentators to mean, ritual execution?
