Some of our colleagues at UNLV have conceptualized the evolution of
legal writing scholarship as a series of leaps.2 The first big leap was to take an interdisciplinary approach to
writing about teaching
writing.3 The second leap was to build community by creating spaces of our own, such as LWI, the Journal, and then later, JAWLD.4 The third leap was to
develop a rich, often interdisciplinary approach to studying and
writing about
legal writing.5 In their article, Linda Berger, Linda Edwards, and Terry Pollman suggested — hoped, perhaps, and I along with them — that scholarship relating to
legal analysis,
skills and practice is no longer considered inferior to traditional
legal scholarship.6 The growing number of schools where
legal writing faculty have achieved equal status due at least in part to their
legal writing scholarship suggests we have made significant progress as a result of these leaps.7
Despite these challenges, law students have a number of opportunities to
develop their

Working in case / project teams, students
develop and hone essential lawyering
skills, including oral advocacy, fact - finding, research (
legal and non-
legal, international and domestic),
legal and non-
legal writing, interviewing, media advocacy, cultural competency and strategic thinking.

skills of client interviewing, counselling and management.
A lot of
skills necessary for a successful law career can be
developed equally as much, if not more, with a non-law degree — for example, an English literature degree requires you to take complex pieces of
writing and analyse them closely, much like you might be doing with
legal documents and cases.
At Southwestern, we have also

Herein lies the problem: if
legal writing professors simply incorporate «e-memo» assignments without considering the distinctions within that category, they may be missing opportunities to
develop a broad range of practical emailing
skills that students are likely to use in practice.
A second alternative theory is that more -
skilled advocates also
write better, so what really influences the outcome is the lawyer's
skill in
developing legal theories, conducting discovery, and marshaling facts, rather than the readability of the lawyer's
writing.
