Recent advances have improved NOAA's intensity forecasts by 20 percent, but there are so many variables influencing the
developing of a hurricane — from the energy they draw from the
oceans to their interactions with the surrounding environment and their
dynamic inner cores — that storms like Matthew befuddle many experts.
For the new study, Thomas Rackow and his colleagues fed actual position and size data of 6,912 Antarctic icebergs into the Finite Element Sea Ice -
Ocean Model FESOM, which they combined with a
dynamic - thermodynamic iceberg model (both of which were
developed at the AWI).
Because climate changes result from
dynamic interactions between the
oceans and the atmosphere, collaborations between sedimentologists, geochemists, marine geologists, paleontologists, planetary scientists, and physical oceanographers will be necessary to
develop, test, and calibrate reliable models using the sedimentary record (e.g., Kutzbach, 1987).
