It's obvious to me that Amazon is
doing nothing more than trying to at least keep some Kindle
owners (like me) from totally pitching the
device when the iPad arrives.
I
do want to agree that, as an
owner of a Nook HD and recently looking at a Samsung Nook, I was impressed that while the new
device has lower resolution I can not tell at all.
The
device also includes the Kindle
Owner's Lending Library, the only smartphone to
do so.
Tablets are, by design, perfect content - consumption
devices (that's what 94 % of current tablet
owners do, said the OPA), and they're also great for web browsing, e-mail and getting your daily news fix.
As an avid reader and iPad
owner, at first I didn't see the point in buying yet another tablet
device, but two factors convinced me that an e-reader was worthwhile.
Of course, some Kindle 2
owners aren't happy that Amazon didn't include them in their
devices — especially when you consider the DX was launched relatively quickly after the Kindle 2 — but such is the cruel reality of a consumer - electronics world in which later products tend to incorporate new features.

did the right thing in my opinion - they made it clear to

Not surprising, given that more than a third of tablet

I also like
doing this because I don't have to worry about Amazon later deciding to delete a book I have purchased (they have

device makes sense) form a Long Tail that will end up being more important than eReader
owners and physical book buyers.
«Somewhat Unsatisfied» users were in the minority for both
devices, with only 1 percent of iPad
owners and 3 percent of Kindle
owners; «Very Unsatisfied» didn't even merit a percentage from the iPad camp, and only reflected 1 percent of surveyed Kindle
owners.
So, whereas now the percentage of smartphone users who will root their
device (the fringe, let's say), though in the many thousands, is small and not representative of the mainstream of
owners (as you imply), eventually an industry will emerge for productizing all the measures now
done by the fringe.
Many current Kindle
owners don't know it
does, because it's put into a submenu called «experimental» and some, when trying it first, 2 years ago, found it slow and didn't try it again (and that includes gadget columnists), not realizing that as with any small
device, the mobile -
device optimized sites are the ones to get to.
We have been told that Google is looking to push up the release of Ice Cream Sandwich
devices as Apple's iPhone 5 is expected in September or October, and the Mountain View - based company doesn't want potential customers coming out of contracts (especially original DROID
owners) and «drooling over the iPhone 5.»
