To turn this into something that could one day be a viable therapy
for people, the team took stomach stem cells from
diabetic mice, engineered them with the same genes and grew mini-organs.
If the
mouse results translate to humans,
diabetics could inject these artificial beta cells to automatically regulate their blood sugar levels
for days at a time.
For the current study the team first isolated mature B cells from the spleens of
diabetic and nondiabetic
mice.

mice did eventually return to the
diabetic state, suggesting that this treatment would not represent a definitive cure
for the disease.
The group also tested low - dose topical application of growth factors on
diabetic mice, which are a common model
for impaired wound healing.
The researchers found that the Type I
diabetic mice that received the modified insulin and blood cell system were able to significantly reduce blood glucose levels
for more than two days.

diabetic mice treated with this combination were cured even after having lost the ability to make insulin
for several weeks, the equivalent of a human patient who has needed insulin injections
for a couple of years.
