A special fecal test called a Baermann fecal is used to
diagnose lungworm infection by identifying the lungworm larvae passed in the stool.

diagnose lungworm in your puppy he needs to be examined by your veterinarian who will do one, or more, of these tests:
Diagnosing lungworm can be time consuming and take several different samples and tests to be sure that there are lungworms in your puppy's respiratory system.
A fecal examination is the most common way to
diagnose lungworms in dogs.

Lungworm can be difficult to
diagnose and can cause a variety of symptoms including coughing; tummy upsets, bleeding disorders and sadly, sudden death.
Because
lungworms typically reside in this area, their presence may be inadvertently
diagnosed through the trachea wash by the presence of
lungworms in the sample.
However, because
lungworms are not terribly common in dogs, and there are many other, much more frequent causes for these same symptoms, a process of elimination must take place to
diagnose the cause and treat the underlying condition.
Cough can also be due to pneumonia, heartworms,
lungworms, collapsing trachea, bronchitis, lung cancer, and many other disorders that can only be
diagnosed by chest X-rays and other testing.
If
lungworms are
diagnosed, an anti-parasite drug must be given.
