Well, our customer service guru, Jessica, addressed many of the basics of
diaper laundry in a recent #ThirstiesLive discussion and we're ecstatic to be able to share her topic with you here today.
We used disposables that whole time — my husband has never done a load of cloth
diaper laundry in our four year baby run....

After launching

We are new to cloth
diapering and I've done a million google searches trying to decide what types we wanted to try out first... For less

diaper... Unfortunately they all were out of our price range besides the Buttons
diapers.

My first thoughts when Ezra would go down for a nap went a little something like this: «Okay, I need to get the

If you run out of
diapers before you are able to get to a
laundry machine, which happened to us when we had longer stretches
in places without
laundry access, you can hand wash a few
diapers to stretch out your supply.

laundry, washing cloth
diapers takes a little more work.
We use cloth
diapers in our house to save money, so we have a fair amount of stinky
diaper laundry to do every week.
Generally I try to shake the poo from
diaper to toilet before tossing the
diaper in the wet bag, making the
laundry cycle a little less poopy.
Rinsing your cloth
diapers very well
in your usual
laundry system will help prevent detergent buildup.
Scientists have proven that the colder the water the greater the reduction
in chemical reaction, meaning the colder the water the less likely your detergent is to work properly to get your soiled
laundry and cloth
diapers clean.
I'm already doing cloth
diaper laundry, so adding
in a few wipes is no problem.
Always begin your cloth
diaper laundry with a cold wash; the cold water will lift and rinse away waste from the
diaper and reduces the opportunity for stains to set
in.
Just store the dirty
diaper in your wet bag until
laundry day.
Little babies are experts when it comes to making big messes, and keeping up with dirty
diapers and soiled
laundry can be difficult with a newborn
in tow.
I do not use bleach, but I do use vinegar
in the rinse cycle to remove any
laundry soap that may remain on the
diapers.
And when you've got a
laundry routine down and have a stash of cloth
diapers in cute prints and colors, you don't exactly mind continuing to cloth.
She is a former music teacher turned cloth
diaper addict and never
in her wildest dreams expected to know more about
laundry than her own mother.
The
diapers make our
laundry room stink if we let them sit more than two or three days since they are
in an open pail.
Having had kids
in both cloth
diapers and disposables, the main thing I noticed (other than the
laundry and odor) is that cloth
diapers wick moisture into clothes.

A few drops of Tea Tree Oil mixed with 1/4 cup of baking soda
in the prewash cycle will aid
in stain removal, disinfection, softening water, and cleaning of your
diaper laundry.
She used them consistently (it should be noted that she loved using the prefolds and how effective they were at keeping that slimy newborn poop
in the
diaper); so the prepped prefold that I am using as an example to show you the difference has been washed and dried (not always
in a machine as she lives
in an apartment with coin operated
laundry) several times since August.
A chemical sensitivity to the fragrances
in disposable
diapers or
laundry detergents used to clean cloth
diapers can also cause
diaper rash.
The
laundry section of this blog is what I find baffling
in the cloth
diaper world.
Cloth
diapers will need to be rinsed out after used and washed
in the
laundry.
Then we throw the
diaper in the
diaper pail, washing the
diapers upon our next
laundry cycle.
Be aware that if you use dryer sheets
in your dryer for other
laundry this can coat your dryer and transfer to your
diapers.

In an ideal world, we would all have free
laundry service that takes care of cloth
diapers for us, and empty landfills as a result.
We recommend having two (2) reusable liners for your 54 Quart Cloth
Diaper Pail or 13 gallon can; one
in the pail and one on its way to the
laundry!
Also, what is the proper way to use essential oils
in laundry care... I assume that you don't want to get the oils on your clothes or
diapers... I am so confused on this one!
There are also liners that act as a
laundry bag and are tossed
in the washer with the soiled
diapers.
Whether you choose to switch to a commercial detergent, increase the amount you use, or add a water conditioner, I hope that the research
in this article simplify your cloth
diaper experience by eliminating or reducing stripping from your
laundry routines, and extending the life of your
diapers.
I keep them
in a hanging wet bag until
laundry day, then I throw them
in with my cloth
diapers and hang dry.
When I visited my family
in May, I opted to bring along disposable
diapers because because single parenting on holidays is hard enough without squeezing
in the time to do cloth
diaper laundry for two.
