We do go through more
laundry detergent but not enough to
really stress about when we aren't buying all those disposable
diapers and wipes.
Cloth
diapering doesn't have to be as convenient as using disposables because convenience isn't a novelty anymore (lets face it, we all do a TON of
laundry anyway so who's
really counting loads anyway).

Culturally speaking, here in the western world we start potty learning very, very, very late (in most cultures around the world even today, pottying happens much earlier simply due to logistics — just consider how few people
really have access to disposable
diapers or
laundry facilities to accomodate cloth
diaper washing, so these cultures are simply more aware of and responsive to a baby's innate ability to recognize and signal about their need for elimination, just as a baby is able to signal for hunger).
Hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, warms clothes / pj's for chilly nights, smores makins» (yes this is a must have), sleeping bags & blankets to make one big family bed in your tent, life jacket that fits
really well,
diapers (we still cloth
diaper if we are camping near
laundry facilites), swim
diapers (or we just use a pocket
diaper without an insert and find that it works
really well to contain what it needs to and doesn't bring on lots of water), first aid kit, flashlight, rain gear, a way to get clean water (filtering it yourself or access to water at the campground), snacks, and a good campsite.
I'd also like to point out that our water bill has increased by only about $ 5 a month since the 3rd child arrived and that's with a whole other person's
laundry, bath's, dishes, etc... as well as the
diapers, so
really it's not that much more water to wash the
diapers at home.
When I started using cloth
diapers, I didn't
really know you were supposed to use a special
laundry detergent, and we used Tide Original Powder for our normal
laundry, so that's what I used for the
diapers too.
As much as I love doing
laundry (and I
really do), I also appreciate just being able to get a new
diaper on the bum ASAP.
Eliminating synthetic inserts from your
diaper laundry makes sense and it
really is true that synthetics are difficult to wash.
As a household with two working parents, our lifestyle
really didn't allow for expensive groceries, time consuming
diaper laundry or making homemade cleaning products.
I have facilities for hanging
laundry, but I have heard of
really frugal people hanging
diapers in their apartments.
And if
laundry really is a big concern, we have found several reasonably priced
diaper services in our area.

Diapers While cloth is great, sometimes you
really just need the convenience of a disposable
diaper for
laundry day or an emergency backup in your bag.
You do more
laundry more frequently anyway, so doing some extra loads of
diapers really doesn't even figure into the equation.
Once I finally got my cloth
diaper laundry routine down pat, I realized that «keep it simple, stupid»
really does apply here.
Not only do I deodorize my shoes with it, but I use it to get rid of stinky odors (aka: dirty
diapers) in my daughter's room, I add it to
really dirty loads of
laundry, and I even use it in a spray to keep those pesky bugs away when I'm outside!
