I know the first time I was asked to beta read something, I thought it was like what
we did in the critique group at the time: correct spelling and punctuation, formatting, wording things the way I would word them.

And even though SSWS attendees were competing with one another for slots
in the book, we cheered each other on,
critiqued stories to help one another, and as often happens with this
group, we
did all we could to help our writing friends succeed.

These communities seem good for newer writers who don't have an
in - person
critique group, and I've recommended them.
I
do still encourage the use of
critique groups and beta readers as a first step
in learning the
ins and outs of the craft and business of writing, but keep
in mind that most of what you hear
in a
critique group needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
Peer review,
critique groups, freelance book doctors, etc., can all help if you're lucky enough to find the right people, but I don't think there's any substitute for what an
in - house editor with a vested interest
in your project can bring to the table.
I've never belonged to a
critique group,
in real life or online, although I
do feel blessed to have a couple really amazing
critique partners.
Just finished going over the copyedits on my 4th novel coming out
in September, and I was dumbfounded at the things I typed that I hadn't caught, and that my other editor didn't catch, or my
critique group didn't catch.
Whether
in person or online, workshops and
critique groups push us to explain why we
did or didn't like something.
Sometimes somebody
in your
critique group will say «why didn't you show her getting dressed?»
And as you say, the best way to
do that is
in a
critique group.
To me, it's no different than when I sit
in critique group and hear what didn't work for my crit partners.
Many writers associations offer
critique groups and if you've never participated
in such a
group, consider
doing so.
Ask your local library or bookstore if there are
critique groups, find a writing conference
in your genre, or consider investing
in a professional editor to help you see what you're already
doing well and what might benefit from further development.
Oh yes, I haven't
done an
in - person
critique group before (other than my parents and I was a newbie and didn't know any better — LOL!)
In critique groups, I've experienced someone reading into my work something more than what I intended or failing to get the meaning I
did intend — both instances frustrate and disappoint.
It didn't take me long to realize that every single issue he had with the book was something I'd added at the request of
critique groups.Trying to please everybody
in my writing
groups can lead to bad habits.
Even if your local or online writing
group doesn't
do critiques, once you get to know people, you might be able to find others
in the
group willing to exchange writing with you on an individual basis, and thus, a
critique partnership will be born!
But one caveat: if the organization
does involve
critiques, remember these
groups do not have all the answers, and amateur writing
groups can often result
in the blind leading the blind.
That doesn't mean I didn't study the craft
in other ways — reading mostly, then a practice novel — but I didn't
do conferences, or
critique groups, let alone an MFA.
My husband kept telling me to start my own
critique group, but I didn't know enough writers
in the Des Moines area.
As for my own authenticity
in writing, I am fortunate that I'm blessed with a
critique group that doesn't pull punches.
I'd suggest you discuss the principles
in your
critique group first, before
doing actual work on manuscripts.
The people
in the
critique groups are typically people just like you, the people who haven't figured out what they're
doing.
Several years ago,
in WA, a bunch of us
in my
critique group all proposed a panel on
doing work - for - hire.
I've since moved away (to SC) and have a new
critique group (still a fledgling) but I hope we can
do something like this
in the future.
I find many commonalities and universal truths... show don't tell, don't be afraid to be bad
in first draft, don't join a
critique group that meets on Wednesdays, etc..
