Funds in the millions of dollars have been diverted from research and development to deal with potential fines and the costs of refitting an estimated 11 million
diesel cars worldwide to meet emissions standards, with 500,000 of those in the U.S. alone.
Update, Sept. 22, 2015: On Tuesday, Volkswagen announced that 11 million
diesel cars worldwide use the same «defeat device» software that evades emissions testing.
In September 2015 it emerged that Volkswagen had fitted software to around 11 million of
its diesel cars worldwide which caused them to release fewer smog - causing pollutants during tests than in real - world driving conditions.
