different water masses, and they had
different chemical properties that influenced what grew there,» she recalls.

Re the cost of flying, there are lots of assumptions around because of
different ways of using or ignoring a 1999 report
on aviation's role in global warming [Aviation and the Global Atmosphere] for the Intergovernmental Panel

I've addressed this question before in various ways, but was prompted to dig into my ideas and feelings about the building greenhouse
effect with new rigor when two very
different magazines, Issues in Science and Technology (the magazine of the National Academies) and Creative Nonfiction, invited me to write an essay
on my 30 years of

Polar amplication is of global concern due to the potential
effects of future warming
on ice sheet stability and, therefore, global sea level (see Sections 5.6.1, 5.8.1 and Chapter 13) and carbon cycle feedbacks such as those linked with permafrost melting (see Chapter 6)... The magnitude of polar amplification depends
on the relative strength and duration of
different climate feedbacks, which determine the transient and equilibrium response to external forcings.
pg xiii This Policymakers Summary aims to bring out those elements of the main report which have the greatest relevance to policy formulation, in answering the following questions • What factors determine global
climate 7 • What are the greenhouse gases, and how and why are they increasing 9 • Which gases are the most important 9 • How much do we expect the
climate to change 9 • How much confidence do we have in our predictions 9 • Will the
climate of the future be very
different 9 • Have human activities already begun to change global
climate 9 How much will sea level rise 9 • What will be the
effects on ecosystems 9 • What should be done to reduce uncertainties, and how long will this take 9 This report is intended to respond to the practical needs of the policymaker.

It is not always clear how to conceptualize many of the ethical questions raised by the various
effects of global
climate change, and
on what basis to choose between
different conceptualizations.
What would that

In
effect, they have traced
climate history back to a very
different world, long before the European discovery of America; a world in which Christian crusaders fought the Saracen forces for control of Jerusalem; in which the armies of Byzantium held the eastern Roman Empire against assault from the Turks; in which the temples of Angkor Wat were first built; in which work
on the great cathedrals of Europe began; in which Venice began to emerge as a great maritime power; in which the first European universities began to take shape.

In a system such as the
climate, we can never include enough variables to describe the actual system
on all relevant length scales (e.g. the butterfly
effect — MICROSCOPIC perturbations grow exponentially in time to drive the system to completely
different states over macroscopic time) so the best that we can often do is model it as a complex nonlinear set of ordinary differential equations with stochastic noise terms — a generalized Langevin equation or generalized Master equation, as it were — and average behaviors over what one hopes is a spanning set of butterfly - wing perturbations to assess whether or not the resulting system trajectories fill the available phase space uniformly or perhaps are restricted or constrained in some way.
By using sophisticated econometric / statistical methods
on 13
different climate databases for the years 1959 to 2015 where available, the study concludes that the changes in CO2 have no measurable net
effects on global temperatures but that global temperatures affect CO2 levels.
The reduction in nighttime cooling that leads to this bias may indeed be the result of human interference in the
climate system (i.e., local
effects of increasing greenhouse gases or human
effects on cloud cover), but through a causal mechanism
different than that typically assumed.
Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to that one, as you are talking about a complete planetary
climate system
on an imaginary planet, and the pressure would have a host of
different effects on winds, evaporation, all kinds of things.
Methodological advances since the TAR have focused
on exploring the
effects of
different ways of downscaling from the
climate model scale to the catchment scale (e.g., Wood et al., 2004), the use of regional
climate models to create scenarios or drive hydrological models (e.g., Arnell et al., 2003; Shabalova et al., 2003; Andreasson et al., 2004; Meleshko et al., 2004; Payne et al., 2004; Kay et al., 2006b; Fowler et al., 2007; Graham et al., 2007a, b; Prudhomme and Davies, 2007), ways of applying scenarios to observed
climate data (Drogue et al., 2004), and the
effect of hydrological model uncertainty
on estimated impacts of
climate change (Arnell, 2005).
Though Hadley cells are expanding in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the
effects on clouds and
climate are
different in each hemisphere.
The
effects of the two
different approaches
on the resulting
climate change impacts depend
on the types of impacts being studied and the region of application.
Over recent decades, scientists have watched the Arctic and Antarctic polar regions respond in starkly
different and perhaps surprising ways to the
effects of increasing human influence
on the Earth's
climate.
This new NASA paper builds upon those previous studies by better quantifying the efficiencies of

Estimating that flux is a major challenge, and so it's not too surprising that
different teams of scientists have ended up with markedly
different estimates for the net
