In 1972 the sitting Labour MP Dick Taverne resigned from the Labour party and from Parliament to re-contest his seat as an Independent Democratic Labour candidate - the last instance of an MP resigning to contest their seat under
a different party label and winning until Douglas Carswell repeated the feat in 2014.
