Ambergris Caye is the island base for tours of a number of
different ruin sites on the mainland, including the very popular Altun Ha, that give us a snapshot of part of the culture that eventually evolved into what we see today throughout Belize and many adjoining countries.

We visited
different archaeological
sites and
ruins from the Ayamara, Quechua, Pukará and Inca culture.
Tikal is distinctly
different from Chichén Itzá and Uxmal (two other ancient Guatemalan Mayan
sites), mainly because the Tikal
ruins are surrounded by dense jungle.
At Coba, we rented bikes to visit the
different sites — Coba is 8th - century
ruins of a Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, and spread out over a big area and it's easier and more fun to explore on bike.
The
ruins at Tulum are a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city located on a 39 foot cliff on on the Caribbean Sea — making this picturesque in totally
different way than the other
sites.
In addition to the breathtaking location, one of the things that makes these
ruins different from other Mayan
sites is the fact that it was once a walled city.
However, I do recommend exploring at least one smaller and lesser - known / frequented Mayan
ruins site in order to have a completely
different and more authentic experience.
