Teaching study involving 1,591 teachers in six

different groups of students within a grade and subject in a

However, for the past 10 years, we have been studying a
different approach to improving and reforming public education ---- one based on building strong relationships among teachers» unions and
school administrations, and developing collaborative institutions in
schools and
school districts focused on improving
teaching and learning.

districts do not use cash bonuses, salary increases, or
different steps on the salary schedule to recruit or retain teachers to
teach in high - need
schools.
That's the conclusion of a new study from The Fordham Institute that offers three
different price tags for the cost of training teachers and purchasing classroom materials to
teach to the new standards.The actual cost would depend on how much
schools and
districts lean on technology in implementing the standards.
If we want
teaching and learning to change, how we interact between the
school district office and
school and how we organize the adults that are leading this change has to be
different.

different districts because of their creative programming and differentiated approach to
teaching and learning.
While the formal or informal leadership roles of teachers may vary in
different schools and
districts, teacher leadership is broadly defined in the 2011 Teacher Leader Model Standards as «the process by which teachers, individually or collectively, influence their colleagues, principals, and other members of the
school community to improve
teaching and learning practices with the aim of increased student learning and achievement.»
It's a complicated process, with
different departments and
schools within the
district attempting to accomplish
different objectives; from improving
teaching practice to maintaining compliance with
district policy.

When asked why she left a traditional
district school and gave up her statutory job protections, Ms. Pulley responded: «I left, like I said because I wanted a
different teaching environment.
Standardized tests don't generally test content, because they're designed to be given in many
different school districts that are all
teaching different things.
I willingly left a
different, well funded, well staffed,
school district just to be able to
teach in a
school district that had such high level
teaching expectations for their
school librarians that were at the hub of bringing their
schools into the 21st century.

school teachers, leaders, and students are not of a
different breed than our neighboring
