Because these other syndromes produce
behaviors that are
difficult to differentiate from RAD, many parents spend a great deal of time seeking proper diagnosis and treatment, not knowing what lies at the core of their
child's
problems.
Behavioral issues are complicated: there are so many factors to one's
behavior (Ex: genetics, environment, individual personality, anxiety, developmental phases, trauma and / or adoption issues, medications, chemical imbalance) that it is
difficult to pinpoint what one or more things contribute to any individual's
problem and how to help your
child.
Studies indicate that parenting classes can reduce your feelings of anger, guilt, and stress — particularly if your
child has
difficult behavior problems (Barlow et al 2014; Furlong et al 2012; Feinberg et al 2014).
The Cleveland schools administrator began her teaching career 24 years ago working with the families of
children whose
behavior problems made it
difficult for them to attend traditional public schools.
They also discussed difficulty in supporting the development of these qualities in their young
children due to
problems dealing with the negative emotions and
difficult behaviors that their
children exhibited.
Night waking and related sleep
problems have been associated with
difficult temperaments and
behavior problems among
children12 — 17 and with poorer neurobehavioral functioning among older
children.17 Parental stress and psychopathologic conditions have also been linked to sleep
problems in early childhood.18 — 22
(They are often reclassified as abused or neglected or abandoned to meet the requirements of funding).28 Whatever the reason for their involvement with
child welfare services — whether
difficult child behavior or some measure of parental incapacity — the share of
children involved with these services who have
behavior problems is substantial.
Christine Buchanan, Eleanor Maccoby, and Sanford Dornbusch found that adolescents had fewer emotional and
behavior problems following divorce if their mothers remarried than if they cohabited with a partner.31 Similarly, two studies of African American families found that
children were better off in certain respects if they lived with stepfathers than with their mother's cohabiting partners.32 In contrast, Susan Brown found no significant differences between
children in married and cohabiting stepfamilies.33 Although these data suggest that
children may be better off if single mothers marry their partners rather than cohabit, the small number of studies on this topic makes it
difficult to draw firm conclusions.
As a post hoc analysis, we examined associations of self - regulatory
problems with coviewing practices to assess whether parents were taking a break from their
difficult children by putting them in front of the TV more often, rather than the recommended practice of watching media together.26 In crude and adjusted models, self - regulatory
problems at 9 months or persistent
problems at 9 months and 2 years were not associated with any parental coviewing
behaviors, such as watching TV with the
child or talking to the
child during TV viewing (data not shown).
But your
child's
behavior problems can make it
difficult, even overwhelming, to manage these relationships and responsibilities.
Meds for
children with
behavior problems should be reserved for those that are extremely angry and aggressive; ones who are very
difficult to handle.

When a
child is having
behavior problems at home or at school, usually it is an indication that something
difficult is happening in that

However groups did not differ on maternal distress on the ECBI or on the PSI Parenting Stress and Parent -
Child Dysfunctional Interaction subscales, although, on the
Difficult Child subscale, treatment mothers reported fewer
problem behaviors.
Their
children showed less emotional negativity and had significant reductions in
difficult behaviors, especially those who had
behavior problems prior to their parents» participation in the program.
Effectively, in several previous studies peer relationships have been found to moderate the effects of
children's problematic attitudes (e.g., anxiety, aggression, and
difficult temperament) on their
behavior problems (Miller - Johnson et al., 2002; Dodge and Pettit, 2003; Gazelle and Ladd, 2003; Ladd and Troop - Gordon, 2003; Henricsson and Rydell, 2006).

behavior problems in 2 - year - olds (Briggs - Gowan & Carter, 2007).
In a study of 145 preschool
children, Tschann and colleagues (Tchann, Kaiser, Chesney, Alkon, & Boyce, 1996) found that
children with a
difficult temperament (e.g., negative mood, distractibility) in high - conflict families had higher levels of internalizing and externalizing
behavior problems compared to
children with less a
difficult temperament or a less conflictual home.
