This isn't a «bad» ingredient, but many dogs (mine included) have some issues
digesting peas or
pea fiber.
They are high in protein and dietary
fiber, as well as being a natural source of vitamin K. They're also very high in vitamin C. However, some dogs have problems
digesting them because of the fibrous cellulose surrounding the interior of the
peas.
The primary ingredient in the sweet potato and venison recipe is, of course, sweet potatoes, however, it has other easily
digested fibers, such as
peas and flax seed, too.
Dogs can probably
digest pea protein concentrate more easily than
pea fiber but we still wonder if this ingredient might counteract some of the claims about how this food is good for dogs with a sensitive stomach.
Other ingredients that stand out include more corn (whole grain corn); soy flakes and soybean meal — possibly in the new SMARTBLEND spongy bits, I'm guessing;
pea fiber which is being used by many dog food manufacturers today; animal fat — which would be better if it were a named fat; and animal
digest.

Pea fiber can make
peas hard for dogs to
digest and this is supposed to be a food that is easy to
digest.
The
pea protein may be easier for dogs to
digest (with the
fiber), but the
peas (with the fibrous outer hulls) may cause some problems.
If your dog has any problems
digesting the food it might be due to the
peas and
pea fiber.
