Although their textbook or mentor teacher typically provided the content structure for the units they taught, computer
resources such as
digital images, video clips, and simulations provided the means for teaching the content creatively.
Examples of online simulations (which help make abstract concepts more concrete) were modeled for them, and they were shown how to engage students with
digital images, videos, animations, and various examples of commercial software and
resources on the Internet.
Easy access to extensive libraries of
digital images and video resulted in these student teachers» making regular use of such
resources to enhance their lessons.
Some of the topics and tools preservice teachers have implemented with their students include using
digital images and Google Earth to explore the Civil War and Reconstruction, using blogs and blogging to examine the issue of personal rights and freedoms, using video podcasts to examine issues of bias in global media reports of issues, and using Internet
resources and video to explore changing political affiliations in post-World War II Europe.
Some even reflected on the notion that
digital technologies do uniquely what other
resources can not do; for example, the functionality of Fun With Construction to deconstruct an
image of a 3D shape into separate plane shapes and then snap the faces back together to reform the shape.
Digital Microfilm: By making over 100 U.S. and Canadian titles available online with
Digital Archive News, ProQuest helps make Newspaper full page
image content more widely accessible for library patrons without the
resource demands for library storage space and upkeep of reader equipment.
