discharges of service members in violation of the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

members of a New York State retirement system to purchase
service credit for up to three years
of military
service performed.
Cuomo signed late Tuesday the legislation, which allows honorably
discharged service members with five years
of existing public pension credit to purchase three years
of credit for their military
service.
With the Department
of Veterans Affairs estimating the
discharge of over a million active duty
service members in the next five years, the number
of loan applicants could potentially skyrocket.
Under this program,
members of the military who have been employed by the military or a qualifying public
service job for the last 10 years may have their federal student loans FULLY
discharged.
Eligibility for

of service, and the applicant must have been
discharged — if not currently on active duty — under conditions other than dishonorable.

discharged within the next five years, it is believed that loan usage will continue to expand.

discharged.
