Brian, Let me ask you this: At what point in the ministry of Jesus did
the disciples have eternal life?

Jesus replies that though the
disciples have given up their actual families, in the new corporate
life of the kingdom a new family will be given, and in the final summing - up of all things, they will enjoy peace and
eternal life with God.
The sovereign choice of Jesus in John 15:16 is not a choice of some out of the mass of humanity to receive
eternal life, but rather, the choice of some out of all His followers and
disciples to
have a deeper fellowship with Him so that they might serve Him and become more productive followers.
If Levi did already
have eternal life, then his actions here are a decision to become a dedicated
disciple of Jesus Christ.

disciples are not to fear man, or to be gullible in thinking that «there is good in every man «40); the decision (man's
eternal destiny is determined by his decision on earth for the devil or for Christ); and the fruit (the
disciples are fellow workers
having as their goal the «salvation of the Church»).41
Once a person
has believed in Jesus for
eternal life, they need to be
discipled.
Eternal life is present now (5:24); judgment is happening now (10:26 - 28); even though the
disciples in John's gospel
have trouble understanding Jesus (as they did in Mark), at the very beginning of the gospel Jesus is described by John the Baptist as «the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world» (1:29).
The verses in John that record how to
have eternal life were true of the
disciples and N.T. believers.
Certainly, there are actions and behaviors that a
disciple (or follower) of Jesus should
have, and we can look for these, but these do not provide infallible proof about whether or not a person
has believed in Jesus for
eternal life.
Yes... When I came to faith / trust in Jesus Christ for
eternal life, things similar to 7 - 9 were in my head until I
had learned / been
discipled enough to understand some basic truths and was able to see and discern error.
