The Fourth
Gospel, which ignores both the baptism and the temptation, says that on the day after John's testimony to Jesus at the Jordan he repeated it in the
hearing of two of his
disciples (In 1:35 - 42), one of whom was Andrew of Bethsaida in Galilee, and that Andrew thereupon brought his brother Simon to Jesus, who named him forthwith «The Rock.»
Throughout Matthew's
gospel, the gentle insistence and power of divine authority consistently cuts through the tangled jungle of human error and ignorance: «You have
heard how it was said of old... But I say to you» (Mt 5, 33 - 34) · Christ prepares the
disciples, and especially Simon Peter, to be bearers of this divine authority.
There is more to write of Jesus than is contained in the
gospels; Jesus has more to say to his
disciples than they can
hear now; and therefore Jesus has entrusted the Spirit to the Church, and he will lead Christians into all the truth of Christ.
