biblical studies has a distinct advantage over theology when it comes to finding a place in the university, since it is a historical
discipline which can and often does just as well locate elsewhere — for instances in a department
of Near East
studies.

It seems impossible also to organize a genuine course
of study including the
Biblical disciplines, church history, theology, the theory and practice
of worship, preaching, and education on other grounds than those
of habit and expediency unless there is clarity about the place
of these
studies and acts in the life
of the Church.
In this curriculum, three
disciplines represent the theoretical side
of the dichotomy (
biblical studies, church history and systematic theology), while practical theology represents the task - oriented program providing the requisite skills for those preparing for the professional ministry.
Whereas
biblical studies experienced the challenge
of modernity in terms
of historical - critical approaches to scripture, pastoral theology experienced it in terms
of the emergence
of psychology and sociology as
disciplines.
At mid-century, oral interpreters
of the Bible followed the overall trend in the
discipline and turned their attention away from the minister's problems with «delivery» to focus on the
study of Biblical texts themselves:

This requires the mastery and use
of the
