Deafness may be caused by a number of factors, including congenital defects, chronic
ear infections, head injuries, drug toxicity, degenerative nerve changes, old age or
disease, such as a tumor or ruptured
ear drum.
The extent of the
disease including degrees of inflammation and thickening, nature of debris, presence of masses or tumors, and the nature and integrity of the tympanum (
ear drum) can be evaluated.
Veterinary care can also prevent a serious
ear disease called otitis externa — an infection of the outer
ear that, if untreated, can progress to the middle and inner
ear and damage the
ear drum, which can permanently affect the animal's hearing and sense of balance.
Research has revealed these
ear infections are not as painful for Indigenous children compared to non-Indigenous children, so the
disease progresses undetected and often results in perforated
ear drums.
