The veterinary ophthalmologist views the widely magnified
diseased eye of his patient staring into binoculars.
A clinical trial investigating a treatment for blindness is under way this winter to evaluate the safety and efficacy of
replacing diseased eye cells with stem cells.
The work, reported in the journal Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, marks the first instance of transplanting stem cells, the progenitors of all cells,
into diseased eyes in hopes of regenerating damaged retinas — thin sheets of cells in the back eye that collect patterns of light.
That's because stem cells must be connected to existing neural networks — something that's not yet possible — whereas gene therapy simply involves making what is left in
a diseased eye photosensitive.
The discovery comes as a surprise to some biologists, but it may eventually help clarify why certain human eye defects arise and lead to ways to repair damaged or
diseased eyes.
In this project, we will study the mechanisms of energy production and regulation, in both healthy and
diseased eyes, particularly those with AMD.
Her diseased eye was removed, and a prosthetic eye was surgically implanted by an animal ophthalmologist.
Not only was she matted from head to toe, she also had a few more serious medical concerns including
a diseased eye and a tumor on her belly.
