Around 1918 Weyl attempted to modify general relativity so that it would not require absolute
measurements of scale or
distance — so that it would abide by an entirely relative
system, again akin to that of Mach.
The
measurement is the
distance to SS Cygni, a star
system consisting of a white dwarf plus a companion.
This innovative solution not only reduces
system implementation costs by using WiFi six dollar chipsets (used, for instance, by very famous Cisco APs) to collect and filter
measurements, but also the novel filtering technique applied requires just a few samples to estimate the
distance range.
For two years, once a week, a
distance measurement was taken of four Pleiades star
systems, and five stars.
According to new
measurements (Staffan Soderhjelm, 1999) found in the new Sixth Catalog of Visual Orbits of Binary Stars, Stars A and B are separated by an «average
distance» of about 48.5 AUs (semi-major axis of 3.8» with a HIPPARCOS
distance estimate of 41.6 ly), or more than the average of orbital
distance of Pluto in the Solar
System.
Previously classed as spectral type M4.5 e (with emission lines), the object was observed to be four times brighter than would be expected for a dim red dwarf of that type based on a revised parallax
measurement of its
distance from the Solar
System (Ken Croswell, Science@Now, September 6, 2011).
If a star / planet
system lenses a background source, we can get a very accurate
measurement of the lensing star and lensing planet's masses,
distance, and physical separation from each other.
This state - of - the - art sensor is the «eyes» of the XE's autonomous emergency braking
system, providing highly accurate
measurements of speed and
distance of objects ahead, and can initiate full braking to avoid or mitigate a collision.
In the meantime, the legislation must fund research to develop soil carbon
measurement systems that are efficiently operable over large
distances.
Similar to the Leroy (1999)
system, it adds total surface area (of heat sources and heat sinks) to the
distance measurement as an additional metric for determining station site rating.
