For her third Painters in Residence project Agnieszka applied Chalk
Paint ® decorative
paint in a sumptuous range of colours, heavily
distressing the piece to give it this rustic
look.
For a
distressed look, sand back to reveal a little of the wood or
paint underneath before applying a second coat of wax.

I knew I wanted to go with red
paint but was not quite sure how to accomplish the «

look almost like dark wood when it peeks under a coat of

Of course, those three layers of
paint made it harder to get the
distressed look when it came time to use the sandpaper.
When the
paint was dry, I
distressed them to give a more aged
look to keep in line with the rest of the piece.
If you prime first and then want to
distress the edges to create an aged
look, you will see the white layer of primer show up on your
painted surface.
I have searched several blogs about chalk
paint including this one
looking for information how how soon chalk
paint can be sanded for a
distressed finish and how soon polycrylic can be applied after the last coat of chalk
paint is dry.
If you plan to
distress the
painted finish with sandpaper to make it
look old once the
paint is dry, then do not use primer.
I love this and since I'm going to be
painting my old (new to me) chairs and some other furnitures
distressed I just think this is fab and the color is just what I have been
looking for for a wood bench that my dad made me many years ago.
If you a going for a
distressed stenciled
look (like Debbie) don't worry about getting completely even coverge with the

painting furniture, even if you want a modern
look — the
paint does not have to be
distressed

distressed you see the bare wood, white and the
paint color — not a
look you want.
If you are not going to
distress the edges of the desk using sandpaper to make the
painted finish
look old, then yes you can prime first.
I have found that, if I end up hating the
distressing on a project, all it takes is a quick brush of
paint on the sanded areas and «poof», we have the pristine
look all over again.
I have stopped
looking for a tormented and
distressed way off expression in
painting.
