Scientists believe that they are one of the breeds that is the least genetically
diverged from wolves.
They were looking for parts of the genome that have been shaped by selection since dogs
diverged from wolves.
Earlier genome - based estimates have suggested that the ancestors of modern - day dogs
diverged from wolves no more than 16,000 years ago, after the last Ice Age.
The timeframe during which the domestic dogs is believed to have
diverged from the wolf can be roughly anywhere between 14,000 to 30,000 years ago or much more.
