Although periodontal diseases have not been «officially» recognized as a complication of DM, the scientific evidence available indicates that poor metabolic control may increase the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis [2]; these periodontal pathologies have also been asso - ciated with
diverse systemic diseases closely related to DM, such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity and metabolic syndrome [3][4].
Today, moderate to severe periodontal disease affects more than 10 % of the world's population and is linked to
diverse systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, pulmonary disease, and type II diabetes.
