After all,
school administrators seek
diversity in their classrooms because when a student
of one race or ethnicity «supports» a student
of another — intellectually, academically, or otherwise — it's a transfer that transcends whatever words or gestures are shared.

I ate up studies (from Facebook and others) that argued the site actually encouraged a certain kind
of information
diversity, because your Facebook friends are likely drawn from a wider group
of people (the guy you went to middle
school with, your mom's neighbor, that rando you met that weekend at the beach) than the people you discuss news with
in real life.

diversity of jobs helps lead to significantly higher student engagement

The students, nine men and eight women suggested by the deans
of their respective
schools, represented not only denominational
diversity but a variety
of backgrounds and work experiences — reflecting the general increase
in the number
of older and second - career students currently attending seminary.
Pursuing a
diversity of mission, however, produces
schools that don't believe
in anything
in particular.
I will suggest some ways
in which to describe very concretely both congregations and
schools, what pluralizes them, what goes on
in them, and how that is somehow «unified» without denial
of their deep
diversity.
A perfect counter-example is Hinduism, which by construction is more spiritual than religious — it's adherents do not have strict rules or norms, and there is incredible
diversity of norms within one umbrella (some who believe
in caste system, even though a large majority
of urbanites study
in Christian missionary
schools; some who believe cows are sacred though 2/3
of Indians are actually non-vegetarian).
I student taught
in a rural area
of central Illinois - a
school with two people who were black (and that was it for the racial
diversity) so they created their own minorities thorugh religion.
The great denominational
schools of America are among the first to admit this; but few
of them are
in a position to press their perception
of the
diversity of the Christian community as systematically, as hourly, as are the great ecumenical seminaries.
This kind
of broad association is
of particular value to a society like ours, one
in which people are increasingly tribalized and segregated and even a laudable value like
diversity can be trivialized, as when a mother brags about how her child attends such a «wonderfully diverse» prep
school, what with the boy from Senegal whose dad is a UN diplomat and the girl from Sri Lanka whose mom is an officer with the World Bank.
It may be that Brown can be so sanguine about overcoming the fragmenting effects
of disciplinary
diversity because the national scholarly organizations that institutionalize the various academic guilds today exercised less political power
in the 1930s over scholars» standing with peers, mobility from
school to
school, and promotion to tenure.
This is certainly so
in Plainfield, Ill., where elementary
school principal Sandy Niemiera made a startling announcement: because
of diversity concerns, students will no longer be allowed to celebrate any holidays at all.

in several board leadership positions, and through navigating the private, independent, and charter
school experiences
of her own five children, has gained valuable insights into the
diversity of school policy and practice.
Because
of the presence
of diversity at my high
school, the opportunities to be involved
in a variety
of unique clubs and organizations seemed endless.
We can talk about the wide
diversity of schools and that there are good «fits» for different kids
in terms
of campus size, academic structure and content, geography, and experiences offered.
Our financial aid and sibling discount programs support this goal, and the families participating
in these programs have contributed significantly to the economic
diversity of the
school as well as to its spiritual and social growth.
The ethos
of the
school is hugely important to me as well — students are exposed to the reality
of spiritual
diversity in the human community, not indoctrinated, and an organic type
of tolerance, respect, and mutuality grows here.
