The merged airline will keep American's AAdvantage
program, the second such airline loyalty
program in the world and currently the largest, in place, and members of US Airways»
Dividend Miles program will be able to transfer their
miles to a new or existing AAdvantage account.
As part of the agreement, members of the US Airways
Dividend Miles and Iberia Plus frequent flyer
programs are also able to earn and redeem
miles on flights operated by either carrier.
If you keep all or most of your
miles in the American Airlines AAdvantage or US Airways
Dividend Miles programs, then your path to Africa lies via oneworld alliance airlines.
For flyers with membership in both
programs, American will match the accounts and combine all
Dividend Miles award mileage, million
mile balance, and elite - qualifying activity with an existing AAdvantage account.
Ultimately, the two mileage
programs will also be merged, so keep in mind when looking at these offers, that USAirways
Dividend Miles will become AAdvantage
miles sometime in 2015.
If you choose to credit your BA travel with Alaska Mileage plan, American AAdvantage or US Airways
Dividend miles, there will be another post shortly on how to maximize these
programs.
When the
programs merge, any
miles in the US Airways
Dividend Miles account will be transferred into the American Airlines account at a 1:1 transfer rate.
As of today, both Airlines operate their own frequent flyer
programs separately (AAdvantage and
Dividend miles).
If you are travelling with British Airways, I would recommend depositing your
miles to anyone of these 4 frequent flyer
programs — British Airways Executive Club, Alaska Mileage plan, American AAdvantage or US Airways
Dividend miles.
The US Airways Credit card and
miles will convert to American Airlines Advantage
miles mid-2015 and will continue to earn AAdvantage
miles when the US Airways
Dividend program merges into AAdvantage.
Also keep in mind that the US Airways
Dividend Miles will go away when the frequent flyer
programs merge sometime in Q2 2015, so that's another card I'd get now before it goes away, and either use the
Dividend Miles before the
program merge, or have them convert into AAdvantage
miles.
In the meantime, if you're looking for a way to boost your
Dividend Miles account — for instance to book a Star Alliance award before March 30 or to take advantage of the
program's award chart sweet spots before they likely go away — or to bank some
miles that you can count on eventually being AAdvantage
miles, it's a great opportunity to apply for a card from an issuer that's not Citi, bank these
miles and then apply for future AAdvantage credit card offers as they come up.
Unlike United, American and most other frequent flyer award
programs, it's not possible to book a one way award using US Airways
Dividend miles for half the price of a roundtrip — you'd pay the same amount as the roundtrip.
