I am a good person and I believe that
the divine order of things has a way of working things out as they should.
Civil religion portrays
a divine order of things, giving us a sense of worth and direction in relation to ultimate purposes.
Make us to love; move in upon us, work through us, put pressure on our little selfish lives, so that we may love «that which thou dost command» — the things, the places, the times, the persons, the circumstances in which God has sent us, the whole realm of
the divine ordering of things.

What ties together Shenk's different arguments is what I call the
divine inversion — the many ways in which God acts contrary not merely to physical nature, but to what humans take to be the natural
order of things in the social and political world.
In the encyclical Aeterni Patris Leo XIII wrote that «a fruitful causeof the evils which now afflict, as well as
of those which threaten us, lies in this: that false conclusions concerning
divine and human
things, which originated in the schools
of philosophy, have crept into all the
orders of the State, and have been accepted by the common consent
of the masses.»
Roger Williams, for example, for all his insistence on the separation
of church and state, believed that such general religion was essential for what he called «government and
order in families, towns, etc.» Such general religion is, he believed, «written in the hearts
of all mankind, yea, even in pagans,» and consists in belief in God, in the afterlife, and in
divine punishments.2 Benjamin Franklin for all his differences from Roger Williams believed essentially the same
thing, as indicated in the quotation from his autobiography in my original article on civil religion.
When we read Aeterni Patris as a whole, we see that Leo framed the revival
of Christian philosophy chiefly in the context
of the ongoing political problems: «False conclusions concerning
divine and human
things, which originated in the schools
of philosophy, have now crept into all the
orders of the State.»
For the older tradition, knowing is participating receptively in the intelligibility
of things, an intelligibility that issues from the
divine intellect that
ordered them and gave them their being and natures.
And the reason I still pray for a
divine interruption in the natural
order of things, in the way
of the world, is because I believe that God is, truly, wonderfully, redemptively, Love.
If God in «his» heaven is a father ruling «his» people, then it is in the «nature»
of things and according to
divine plan and the
order of the universe that society be male - dominated.4
The self - determined civilization
of the last centuries is disintegrating because it does not correspond to the
divine (i.e., universally meaningful)
order of things.
The process - relational model
of God as the most extensive exemplification
of primordial creativity, with every worldly occasion in its own process
of becoming; the process - relational concept
of God as the principle
of order channeling the world's becoming toward ever richer and more harmonious experience (the primordial nature); and the process - relational concept
of God's preservation
of every worldly occasion in God's own everlasting becoming (the consequent nature), with each such occasion evaluated and positioned for its greatest possible contribution to the
divine life — these perspectives on
divine reality which process - relational thought claims to find exemplified in the very nature
of things are separately and together congruent with and supportive
of the biblical images and events which describe the «already» in inaugurated eschatology.»
Notice, then, that in the prayer Jesus taught the
order of things is this: first, identification with God, his will, his kingdom
of sovereign love; next, asking for daily bread or what is needed to make life possible; then, deliverance from evil and from the test that will be too much for us; and all
of it, as Matthew's gospel recognizes when it adds the doxology to the simpler Lukan version, to God's glory — so that the
divine will may be done, and be seen done, «in earth as in heaven.»
Nevertheless,
divine soul or souls exercise a providential universal causality, not only in great
things but in small as well,
ordering everything for the good
of the whole, as far as may be (Laws 894 - 904).
It was not a new organic Church but a council or agency
of co-operating Churches uniting on a common profession
of Jesus Christ as
divine Lord and Saviour, in
order to carry on co-operative activities and discussions in such
things as home missions problems, Christian education, foreign missions, and other activities.
