Mediation offers many of the advantages of collaborative
divorce, but it does not offer access to the emotional, legal, and financial
coaching and expertise that many
divorcing couples have found to be an extremely helpful aspect of the collaborative
process.
Having witnessed the devastating
divorces of colleagues, (that went on for years and left hearts, families and finances in tatters) I emphatically decided to train in this transformative technique and I became a certified

coach may be helpful to increase confidence in the mediation
process and to ensure that you are receiving fair and equitable treatment.

While many couples enter the Collaborative
Divorce process by contacting a Family Lawyer, you can also begin by contacting a
Divorce Coach.
In the CFL
process, while the couple retains separate lawyers, they also retain a single financial advisor, and even child experts and
divorce coaches, who form a team with the attorneys and clients.
A collaborative settlement
process is a method of dispute resolution in which other professionals, for example,
divorce coaches, child specialists, financial specialists, psychologists, parenting coordinators, etc., are brought into the
process as a way to help address or resolve specific issues.
Your collaborative team, including family lawyers, financial specialists,
divorce coaches and child specialists, provide support for you and your
divorce process.
Divorce coaches are marital and family therapists who have been specially trained in the collaborative
process.
There are typically three types of professionals (or «consultants») who work with parties who choose to
divorce using the collaborative
divorce process: attorneys, financial neutrals, and mental health professionals (typically referred to as «
coaches.»)
While it is certainly true that people who are in a tremendous amount of conflict to the point that they are completely unable to negotiate in a reasonable way even with the support of the mental health
coach, the collaborative
divorce attorneys, and the financial neutral, then the
process can not work.
When couples are working with therapists, life
coaches, etc. - the
divorce process is so much easier.
In addition to being sure they receive solid basic training in the team - based model of the Collaborative
Divorce process as well as regular continuing education, it can helpful for
Coaches to shadow a more experienced
Coach for a case or two before taking their own cases as a way to experience for themselves the various roles the
Coach needs to play in the case.
When mediation is not an option, I work with clients individually as a
divorce coach and provide education and support as they work through the legal and emotional
processes of
divorce.
