A
"divorce petition" is a legal document that a married person fills out and submits to a court. It asks the court to end their marriage and lists the reasons why they want a divorce.

In divorce petitions that are not joint, one party petitions the court for a divorce while the other party responds to the petition.
If the spouses can reach negotiated agreement on all issues, then all that remains is to file the absolute
divorce petition at the end of the one - year physical separation period.
