debt before you pay it, you may use this sample letter text to request more information.
Unless provided in the initial contact, within five (5) days, every
debt collector must send a written «validation notice» indicating how much money you owe, the name of the creditor you owe, what dispute rights you have if you think you
do not owe this
debt, and how to obtain information
about the original creditor.

Debt Collector, I had a sudden bout of anxiety that had nothing to
do with the normal release - day - jitters.

If a
debt collector does not know whether the
debt submitted for collection is time barred, it would be easy to include general language
about that possibility.
Unfortunately, we
do not have any data
about the success rate of that counseling, nor will the Department of Education release an unredacted version of the Private Collection Agency Manual so that we can see how it has instructed its
debt collectors.
Most
debt collectors do not have information
about you other than what's on your credit report.
If you are being hassled by a credit provider or
debt collector about a
debt (including outstanding loan repayments), you need to take action straight away - even if you're not sure if you owe the money or you don't agree with the amount.
If a
debt collector contacts you
about an old
debt,
do not make a payment or confirm the
debt in writing.

The Federal Trade Commission, which handles
debt collector harassment complaints, received nearly 68,000 complaints last year
about the tactics being used by
debt collectors to try and get money from people that don't have it.
You get calls from
debt collectors about unfamiliar medical bills, or see medical collection notices that you don't owe on your credit report.
They didn't know they could
do anything
about harassing
collectors or that the
debt buyer might not be able to prove it had the right to collect.
What if I had a secret card my abusive husband didn't know
about, and the
debt collector let it slip, and the husband beat me over it?
I don't have a website anywhere that says I sue
debt collectors; all I have is a consumer law blog that talks a lot
about debt collection and other consumer issues.
A year later I was only able to know that they had
done nothing
about it because I started to get calls from
debt collector.
Mortgage
debt collectors can not state or imply that your wages will be garnished or your property seized, unless the bank has obtained the legal right to
do so and is
