In practice, many of the people who join
giveaways do so to get
free books, and if they don't win they just move on to the next group of
books and authors until they score a win.
Reach out to the owners of these sites and ask to
do free giveaways or call - in for a
book club chat.
One question I can't seem to find an answer to is — what program to use to create the
free mobi file for the
giveaway book — that is
book # 2, the magnet
book Can I use scrivener + amazon's Kindlegen or
do I need to create the
giveaway mobi another way?
One
giveaway does not lead to consumer expectation that all
books will be or should be
free.
Authors can
do this too; many authors
do book trailers, but have you ever thought about offering your audiobook for
free on YouTube as a
giveaway?

The main issues have been print copies, as they require new ISBNs — but I gave the change a positive spin and
did a
giveaway of signed First Editions to my fiction email list (signup and
free book here!)
I'll be
doing some great
giveaways, including
free digital copies of my
book The Post-College Guide to Happiness, paperback and audio
book versions of the
book and even a Kindle Fire!
Instead of solely distributing advanced reader copies (ARCs) to
book bloggers or reviewers via Netgalley or Edelweiss, allocate a few copies for a
free giveaway that gets people excited to read your
book, even if they don't win one of those
free copies.
There is only one thing that Goodreads can't
do for
free, and that's
Book Giveaways.
I try to
do a handful of writing contests or
giveaways each year — these could include publishing or
book marketing help, cool stuff only authors could appreciate, or bigger things like a
free resort stay in Mexico or a month's writing retreat in a castle.
Besides, with Smashwords, it is a breeze to
do giveaways and promotions for all your titles, and it is the only way to have Amazon have one of your
book (let's say # 1 of a series) as a perma -
free to capture more readers.
Since I have your
books, I hope I still got entered in the
giveaway even though I didn't actually download the
free files.
The people joining your
giveaway see your
book as valuable (because everyone else who didn't join the
giveaway has to pay for it) AND you now have their email address for giving away that high - value
free book.
I also
do a lot of competitions and
giveaways, including setting my
book as a «perma -
free»
giveaway at my site, on Amazon, and on Kobo.
That means you need to get in the habit of emailing your networks, working your social media (personal and professional),
doing giveaways for
free copies to get
books in hands.
One way of
doing so is by initiating a
free book giveaway, especially useful if you have an eBook.
If you don't have any permafree
books, I'd
do a
giveaway followed by a KDP
free book deal.
I don't believe that one
giveaway leads to an expectation that all of an author's
books will be
free.
Either Amazon should count the
giveaway sales as regular sales (as they claim they
do), or they should update their sponsor FAQ to state that
book sales ranking (
free or otherwise) is not affected by Amazon
Giveaways.
So
giveaway books (including ebooks and paper
books),
free promos (via KDP Select promos), and
books «gifted»
do NOT count as «verified» for reviews.
My conclusion: If you don't want to join KDP Select, but you
DO want to give away free copies of your Kindle books at Amazon, you now have that option (although you have to PAY Amazon for the privilege, and unlike ebooks on a free KDP Select promo, your Amazon Giveaway ebooks will NOT count toward the «Free in Kindle» bestseller rankings — or any sales rankings for that matter
