It was worth
doing the
hike with Pedro and not just using the park
guide that is required to go with all groups, as our park
guide did not speak any English and was very much disinterested in
doing the
hike, so had we not had wonderful Pedro with us we would not have gotten nearly as much information and enjoyment from the
hike.
After an open - air dinner, guests take
guided hikes through the preserve to watch the animals
do their thing, and end the evening with storytelling around a campfire.
Choose to
do either a specialty
guided hike on it's own, or choose the
guided hike with a lift ticket, and get some extra sightseeing in!
Go on a self -
guided hike,
do some tide pooling or...
The best way to see animals is really with a
guided tour by an expert who knows how to find them, but another great way is to just
do lots of quiet
hiking, especially very early in the morning, up streams or on the beach in undeveloped areas, such as the
hike to Playa Grande in Montezuma, or going north from Playa Hermosa.
With this in mind, your
guide can
do as much (or as little)
hiking as you prefer.
There are good
hiking routes around that doesn't require a
guide.
Hiking and walking should be kept to the trails and can only be
done with an official national park
guide.
A small word of advise, only
do this with a
guide, it would be a shame to have to go swimming when all you wanted to
do is take a
hike and while we are it, don't forget to bring some old
hiking shoes, beceause it is going to be muddy.
Our excellent
guides took the group to remote places, encouraged and supported us as we
did some easier and then really challenging
hikes, giving ongoing commentary on the history and culture of New Zealand and cooking delicious meals along the way, the final feast was an absolute treat.
This
hike can only be
done with a
guided tour as it is through the Werner Sauter Wildlife Reserve, a protected area.
But my options were to
hike the canyon independently and alone (which I wasn't prepared to
do for safety reasons after my experience in Ollantaytambo), to take a
guided tour (which would take half the fun out of a trek that I had my heart set on
doing independently) or to trek with Stu and swallow the compromise.
