Doing so requires you to cancel attacks, exploit enemy weaknesses, choose from three levels of customizable
combos, unleash either solo or cooperative arts by using up some AP, deploy a more
powerful Ignition mode, and go into Overdrive in order to unleash hell on your adversaries.
I found that executing the more
powerful combos is pretty easy, but the harder part is to understand and know when to
do them since once you start one, you can interrupt it unless you're hit by the monster.
It
did take PGA, DGA and SAG, and that's a
powerful combo that usually results in a Best Picture win.
That
does not make the game bad, but I think there could be more
combos that would make our hero more
powerful.
There were times when I know I've hit the right arrow only to have my character still be facing left and
do a
powerful attack resulting in a
combo reset.
The net effect of the
combo is to make your next attack more graphically appealing, but it doesn't really add much in the way of a more
powerful and devastating attack.
For example with the knuckles you start out with a quick 3 - hit boxing type punch, then at lvl10 after hitting the special attack button right after the first
combo is over your character will
do one more punch then a
powerful kick that blasts all enemies in your path away, and at lvl.20 you'll
do a few flips towards your enemy ending in one final dive that
does massive damage.
A particular sword
does bleeding damage, while a
powerful axe unleashes critical hits that transition into new
combo moves.
What this system allows you to
do is link with one of your AI teammates and pull off
powerful combo attacks or have your linked partner guard you from a rear attack.
