referred cases to Silver after the speaker came to his office to ask what was going on.
Through a friend, Taub, who also holds a PhD from London University, met Silver, who demanded the
doctor refer his patients to the law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, which specialized in tort
cases involving asbestos - related diseases, according to prosecutors.
The prosecution alleges that Mr. Silver steered state grants to mesothelioma research to Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital in exchange for a
doctor there, Dr. Robert Taub,
referring patients to a law firm that sues on behalf of such patients, Weitz & Luxenberg, where Mr. Silver was of counsel and received lucrative payments for
referring clients with asbestos
cases.
According to prosecutors, Silver received millions of dollars in referral fees for sending asbestos cancer
cases to the firm after respected Columbia research

cases to Silver, who is a lawyer.
The
doctor, a cancer researcher, then
referred lucrative asbestos
cases to a law firm, Weitz & Luxenberg, which gave Silver a cut of the legal fees.
The
doctor, in agreeing to
refer patients to Mr. Silver at Weitz & Luxenberg, said he knew how valuable such
cases could be for all involved, including Mr. Silver.

ALBANY — The federal corruption
case against Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver rests in part on his alleged scheme with a
doctor who
referred asbestos
cases to the Weitz & Luxenberg law firm where Silver is of counsel.
«There was a
doctor who worked on that
case who was actually from Buffalo, who was with the ASCPA in New York at the time, and he classified the dogs at three levels and some of the dogs were actually rehabbed,» Browning said,
referring to Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, who was an adjunct professor of anthrozoology at Canisius College from 2011 to 2015.
«If a person calls our radio show and says they have a problem that no other
doctor has been able to help them with, that they can't crack the
case, I
refer them to Bolte,» says Jerry Hickey, a pharmacist and host of InVite Radio, a nutritionally oriented program aired on the New York City — based talk station WOR.
The study found that although 86 percent of
doctors did feel obliged to present all options in such
cases, only 71 percent said they would feel obligated to
refer the patient to a
doctor who did not object to the requested procedure, and 63 percent believed it is ethically permissible for a
doctor to describe his or her objection to the patient.
