The Arts of India, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas at the Dallas Museum of Art is the second in a series of catalogues documenting the magnificent works in the DMA's encyclopedic collection, following the 2009 publication of The Arts of Africa at the Dallas Museum of Art.
An important contribution was made by the Getty Research Institute directed by Thomas W. Gaehtgens.Thanks to careful study of documents, letters and photographs related to Szeemann and the 1969 show — carried out by the Fondazione Prada in collaboration with GRI curator Glenn Phillips and his team — and to detailed analysis of a collection of more than 1,000 black and white and color photographs, it was possible to identify both the works in the exhibition and the ones that were not put on display — for technical reasons — at the Kunsthalle or in the secondary exhibition space at the Schulwarte.The result was a complete and precise mapping of what happened in Bern.
Constantly renewing their collection in an open - minded and experimental manner, the collectors of these works have created an outstanding document of the last twenty years of art history: it reflects a profoundly heterogeneous art landscape that is grappling with the explosion of possibilities inherited from the artistic revolutions of the twentieth century, while at the same time responding to the glut of images enabled by a world that is ever more globalised and technologically interconnected.
During his three - and - a-half year tenure at the High Museum, Mr. Labaco helped to develop and strengthen the museum's collection of 20th - and 21st - century design, which he partially documented in the recent exhibition Under Construction: Building a Contemporary Design Collection for the High (2010).
