documentary style (the film that propelled him to prominence: Tangerine, was shot using only iPhones), taking the viewer on a journey through his young characters» lives.
As often happens,
documentary tendencies ran through some of the festival's best fictions, notably The Florida
Project by Sean Baker (whose previous film was the astonishing Tangerine) and The Rider by Chloé Zhao: the first an excursion into the candy - colored stucco dilapidation of the residence motels and junk shops clustered a few streets away
from Disney World, the second a trip into the ranches and rodeo arenas of South Dakota's High Plains.
That the Before series can provide
documentary - like authenticity
from screenwriting demonstrates the passion and care that Linklater and his principals have invested in this fringe pet
project that seems to grow in stature with each new installment.
Also disappointing was Something Better To Come, a Danish / Polish
documentary that embarks on the Boyhood - like
project of watching a Russian girl
from age 10 to 24 as she grows up in a massive landfill 13 miles away
from the Kremlin.
